To the Honourable the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, in Legislature Assembled
We urge the British Columbian Parliament to amend the Clean Energy Act (Bill 17) dated April 28, 2010, to include nuclear power as a safe, low-carbon, sustainable, competitive, and long-term energy solution for our future.
On December 1st, 2023, at the 28th annual United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), 22 countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, and France, pledged to triple nuclear power capacity by 2050.
Integrating nuclear power into British Columbia's Clean Energy Act is essential for creating a complete and balanced clean energy mix while safeguarding BC’s water resources.
This inclusion will help ensure a reliable and cost-effective energy source, support BC's electrical, process heat, and hydrogen needs, benefit First Nations communities by fostering economic development and a carbon-free future, and aid industries across BC in achieving low operational and lifecycle carbon intensity to meet emission reduction targets.
Additionally, it will create new high-paying jobs, reduce dependence on electricity imports from the US, and provide a solid foundation for the future development of BC's electricity needs.
